22nd Annual Rhode Island Open
Juried Show & Competition
November 1 - December 5, 2008
Awards Reception:
Friday, November 7th, from 7 - 9 pm
Now in its 22nd year, the Rhode Island Open is one of the most
prestigious competitions in the Ocean State, celebrating the best of
Rhode Island's rich and varied art community. The RI Open serves not
only as an exhibition that represents the best artists in the state but
is also an important fundraiser for the WMOA. The Open helps support the
Summer Art Camp for Kids and preserves a performance venue for groups
like the award winning Unexpected Company improv comedy troupe, and many
other spectacular, monthly art exhibits.
Indeed, this year's exhibition looks particularly expressive. You can
walk in any direction throughout the gallery, and find a piece that will
captivate your senses and emotions. While many other galleries adhere to
a rigid, formulaic display, the 22nd Annual RI Open at the WMOA is
refreshingly unrestricted. The RI Open 22 is a cohesive, solid show,
showcasing the creative work of the most talented artists in Rhode
Island. It is an art exhibit that allows the viewer to relax their mind,
let it wander and connect with the images as it will.
The Warwick Museum of Art wishes to congratulate the artists chosen for

The only puzzle to be solved is: How did 23 individual artists, working
in a broad range of styles and mediums, all working independently from
one another, come to be part of this show?
The answer: Michael Peery, the juror for the RI Open 22. Michael’s
impressive resume contains a BFA Utah State University, 1992. MFA The
New York Academy of Art, Cum Laude 2000. While at New York Academy,
Michael received multiple scholarships for excellence; The Gamblin Award
for outstanding student and the first annual Forbes Award to paint in
France. His most recent acknowledgments are The James DuPaul Award in
2006 and The Prince of Whales Award in 2008, which allowed him to go
back to France. Since 1999, Michael has been working as a teacher,
lecturer and demonstrator of Fine Art principles in and around New York
City and New England. He has taught at the New York Academy of Art, The
Lyme Academy College of Fine Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Rhode
Island College and Woodstock School of Art in New York. His paintings
have been accepted into many juried shows throughout New York City and
the Northeast including exhibitions at The Dahesh Museum, The Arnot
Museum and The Fort Wayne Museum. His work hangs in many private and
public collections including Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermes and The Forbes
Foundation.
Michael chose the “cream of the crop”. Rich images, graceful paintings,
some with subtle narratives, some with obvious ones. On display are
paintings that push the boundaries of color theory, reflection and
refraction. Each artist selected has been showcased for their masterful
approach to their medium and subject.
Please join us on Friday, November 7th from 7 – 9pm for the Awards and
Opening Reception to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our Rhode
Island artists. The RI Open 22 will run from November 1 – December 5,
2008. Gallery hours are: Wednesday & Thursday 2 – 7 pm. Friday and
Saturday from 11 am – 4 pm or by appointment.
